Review: Van Helsing

What happens when you cross a gothic horror movie with state-of-the-art special effects? You get Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale starring in Van Helsing. Not only does our hero fight vampires, werewolves, and Frankenstein's creation, in the first 5-minutes he dispatches Mr. Hyde. This is one cool movie with sequels written all over it.

Looking and sounding more and more like Mel Gibson, Jackman fits very nicely into the role as a monster hunter. The main villain, Dracula, even sounds like he's supposed to: with that mysterious Transylvanian accent. There's even a creepy Igor. He used to work for Frankenstein, but changed jobs because Dracula pays him.

Our man Van doesn't work alone. He takes along Carl, a friar who wants to become a monk. We meet him in the lab where Van gets equipped for his journey. Carl reminded me of "Q", the gadget guy in all the 007 movies.

Van Helsing is written and directed by Stephen Sommers, the man behind The Mummy and its sequel.

Here are some suggestions on what the producers should call the sequel to Van Helsing. How about Van Morrision, or Van Diesel, or perhaps Chevy Van?
