Review: Anchorman

Make no mistake, Anchorman is far from being the perfect movie, but do you know what? It made me laugh, and at just over 90 minutes, it doesn't take up too much of your time.

Will Ferrell is Ron Burgundy, star of the 6-o'clock news at a TV station in San Diego, sometime in the 1970s. With "helmet hair", leisure suits, and a great soundtrack, the movie does that decade rather well. Burgundy and his three dim-witted staff member friends are about to have their world rocked by â€" gasp â€" a woman!!!

Christina Applegate is Veronica Corningstone, who is hired by the station as a reporter. She really wants to do what Ron Burgundy does: become a news anchor.

The story at this point is incidental. What is important: the smart array of un-billed appearances, including Vince Vaughn as the anchor of a rival TV station, Ben Stiller as the anchor of the Spanish station, Tim Robbins as the PBS guy, and Jack Black as a biker. Plus, the movie is narrated by Bill Kurtis, the real-life newsman who hosts Investigative Reports on A & E. There's also a cute dog named baxter (dogs in movies are always cute).

The movie is written by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay and directed by McKay.

While you won't be seeing this movie at Oscar time, you could do worse. Hey, stay classy Winnipeg!
