Review: Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

Renee Zellweger â€" as she was in the first Bridget movie three years ago â€" is delightful as the thirtysomething British woman who still smokes, still calls "Ben & Jerry" her best friends, and of course is still single.

What keeps the 2nd Jones movie from being great is a wasted 20-minute segment in Thailand where our plucky heroine spends time behind bars and teachs her fellow inmates the words to madonna's "Like a Virgin" and they all sing together. Thank God the producers didn't make them sing "I Will Survive".

After Bridget is freed from prison, she's back in London still pining for Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). Hugh Grant is also back as the overly-annoying Daniel Cleaver. Nothing personal, Hugh, but you appear to be stuck in Adam Sandler land: SAME ROLE OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

There are several funny scenes, including trying to fit into the "perfect dress" for an upscale gala with her boyfriend, and skiing for what appears to be the first time. Also, a great soundtrack featuring "I'm Not in Love" by 10cc and Carly Simon singing one of the great 007 theme songs, "Nobody Does it Better". James Bond fans will get the joke when that song is played.

The movie is directed by Beeban Kidron (To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar).
