So You Think You Can Dance: Weekly Roundup

This week on our Canadian show: We started out good with a couple of strong routines, but by the end... eeyugh. And questionable though the fairness of it all might be, the right people went home.

This week on the U.S. show: Deaf girls who can dance, same-sex dancers who can dance, crazy asthmatics who can't dance, and alien abductees who can sort of dance but not well enough.

So You Think You Can Dance Canada, Top 14 Week

What is happening on this show? Jayme Rae & Daniel had a comparatively horrible night and ended up in the Bottom 3? Natalie & Danny's collective time had somehow come, their first time in the Bottom 3, while Amy & Vincent's time is apparently not here, despite three straight weeks dancing for their lives? Karen Kain is a judge on a television dancing show? Benji is turning his actual, real-life heartbreak into horrible West Coast Swing-tinged contemporary numbers danced to Kanye West?

UP IS DOWN! DOWN IS UP!

And on this, the first week I actually remembered to vote, too. Well, at least my two favourite routines of the night (Melanie & Cody and Tara-Jean & Everett, for the record) were safe.

I have several random rhetorical questions I must pose: What's with the overly cheerful lighting for all of Gustavo Vargas' routines? Why has Melissa Williams been so consistently un-awesome this season? Why are the choreographers hanging out backstage (or wherever that blue-lit area is) these days instead of in the audience? Why did that John Byrne jazz routine have to happen? When will Austin put a shirt on?

And one final thought: I would like to see some routines with good, solid transitions. Too many of them are like, "Step step step. Pause. Prepare. Lift. Step step. Pause. Prepare. Spin." I don't know whether to blame the choreographers or the dancers.

So You Think You Can Dance, Auditions #2

There isn't much comment-worthy happening over on the SYTYCD auditions, except for Legacy, who you know is making the Top 20 (and from what I can tell, deservedly). Phoenix served up a generally boring helping of dancers, and quite honestly I am already tired of Nigel's teeth and hair.

Hey, did you hear they added Adam Shankman as a permanent judge? I want to know if this means four judges every week, and if so, WHY GOD WHY? There is already so much nattering going on over at that other talent show on the same network; why must we have it here too? I want more DANCING and less TALKING.

That said, I do love Adam, but what the producers of this and that other show do not seem to understand is that there is such a concept as TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING. Why must they ruin everything I love? Sigh.

OH ya, and I have to admit, I had a bit of a hate on for Emmanuel, from back in his skating days, I felt like he had some serious entitlement issues. But, I am slowly warming to him, not sure if its his super fantastic partner or his broken finger, but I am enjoying him this season. My fav right now is Tara-Jean, I admit I am totally biased, because she is from my hometown, and I always root for the hometown contestant ( Yeah Theo Tams!!!). But, I seriously think the girl can dance anything that she gets handed to her!

Glad to be back sharing my thoughts on dancing with the world! ...Or the four people who read this column, haha.

I'm warming up to Emanuel as well, to my chagrin.

I am completely warmed up to Emanuel...to my complete shock.

It is very unfortunate that one 'bad' week put Jayme Rae and Daniel in the bottom. I didn't even think it was that bad.

I was very okay with seeing Natalie and Danny go. You mentioned some routines looking step step pause do something...I thought their routine was THE WORST for this. I found it very frustrating and made me hate it.

It just goes to show that Canadian viewers are not very forgiving--one bad week and ZOOM.
