The Big Bang Theory: The Pirate Solution

I am absolutely stunned. Monday's episode of The Big Bang Theory, in my opinion, was absolutely, bar-none, the best episode of the series ever aired to this point. The suprising and totally fulfilling feature on Raj in the episode was just that; we were offered a biting wit, a fresh and intelligent realism, and a strong and competent counterpoint to Sheldon's overbearing and peculiar nature.

As Raj is a character who has essentially been very one-dimensional and not fully fleshed-out, so to speak, the manner in which the writers showcased his humour and personality was all the more shocking. Nevermind Penny, Leonard and Howard's uncomfortable circumstances pertaining to the third-wheel syndrome, this show was all about Raj, especially as a foil to Sheldon. The "Eye of The Tiger" theme sequence is just the type of humour the writers have had at their disposal but never fully realized; that is, the ability to utilize the nerd factor and the extreme intelligence of the characters in a manner that juxtaposes it against conventionality and parodies in a way which is much less self-deprecating and more absurd. Raj's boldness and assertiveness in the face of Sheldon's resolution was refreshing, persuasive and humourous in a manner which we would have not have believed capable of any character, let alone Raj.

Here's hoping the future of Big Bang includes many more showdowns between Raj and Sheldon. Hopefully, it also allows us to view further into the mind of the former, a character who is now possibly my favourite of the program due to this single episode, and one who may soon overtake Sheldon's spotlight as the shining light of the series.

Stay tuned for next week when Sheldon enters a trading card competition and Wolowitz asks to be set-up with one of Penny's friends (Yikes!).

Love each of the characters in a different way but I don't think Raj or anyone else will ever dethrone Sheldon as the creme de la creme of obnoxiously self involved nerd and truly one of my favourite TV characters of all time..

Nobody will ever beat Sheldon at his own game, but I think that Raj may end up being more enjoyable to watch when all is said and done.
