Late night talk show guests: May 31-June 6

It's mostly repeats this week in late night land. Tonight, for instance, is all repeats south of the border, as it's Memorial Day (the only non-repeat is CBC's The Hour with George Stroumboloupoulos). But The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are back from a little more than 2 week hiatuses on Tuesday (and oh how we've missed them), while Jimmy Kimmel and Craig Ferguson have new episodes later on in the week.

Because of this mostly "off" week, there's not much exciting to talk about. Last week was pretty bland, too, with only a couple noteworthy things taking place. First, Jimmy Fallon had his "Watch Jimmy with Jimmy" experiment, where you could watch live video of Jimmy in his office with a bunch of staff at the exact same time the show was airing each night. It was great insight into the show, but not quite as advertised -- they talked less about exactly what was going on at that moment (like a DVD commentary) and more about all sorts of random (but interesting and hilarious) stuff related to the show.

The other thing that should be mentioned is that last Friday was the last Tonight Show/Jay Leno Show for Kevin Eubanks. After taking over for the great Branford Marsalis in 1995 as bandleader, he's been Jay's sounding board ever since. He's taking the whole band with him, and the new music director begins next Monday. It's been made quite clear on here that I'm not a Jay fan, but I always kind of liked Eubanks -- besides him being an accomplished jazz guitarist who's worked with some of the all-time greats, he seemed to be a pretty genuine guy, to boot. Too bad he's more famous for his laughter after a bad Leno joke.

Anyway, even in this week short on new shows, there are still some great guests to check out:

  • Evangeline Lilly (Wednesday on Ferguson) – Will we get any Lost finale answers? Doubtful. (Though there might be a bit of a finale explanation, for those who still didn't understand things, even after Dave tried to summarize things for you in his final recap.) But since Evangeline has said she may be done with acting for a while (or forever?), this may be the last we see of her for a long, long time. So don't miss out!
  • Morgan Freeman (Wednesday on Stewart) – This isn't the first time I've mentioned Morgan Freeman on here. In fact, it was only a few weeks ago that he was on Ferguson and I said you should all check it out (that show actually repeats tonight). Anyway, he's on The Daily Show this week, and you should check that out, too. Do I really need to give you reasons? It's Morgan Frickin' Freeman!
  • Jonah Hill (Thursday on Stewart, Thursday on Lopez) – Jonah Hill has 2 movies coming out in the next month, though he's undoubtedly out right now promoting Get Him to the Greek (where he stars opposite Russell Brand and Sean "Diddy" Combs). But I'm more looking forward to his more indie-leaning comedy, Cyrus, where he plays Marisa Tomei's son, who gets jealous of her new boyfriend (John C. Reilly). It looks incredibly funny!
  • Vampire Weekend (Thursday on Kimmel) – It's always fun when Colbert has a musical guest on. First, the interview will undoubtedly be the most unique the band has ever participated in. But there's also a good chance that Colbert will somehow involve himself in the performance (as lead singer for part of the song, back-up singer, back-up dancer, or something else entirely). The fact that Vampire Weekend seems like such a fun band makes this even more likely. (On a personal note, I once saw them walk by in the Late Night with Conan O'Brien hallways when I was watching a taping of the show from the green room. I've never seen them perform "live", but they were the musical guest for one of my coolest experiences ever!)
  • Charlyne Yi (Wednesday on Ferguson) – I've mentioned her before, but Charlene Yi is hilarious and adorable, and deserves to be known by more people! The last time she was on with Craig, you could tell he felt the same, so it's no surprise that she's back again so soon (it's only been a little over a month, I think).
