The MET Gala, or the MET Ball, is that singular event that brings together art, fashion, and celebrity. On the first Monday in May, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute unveils a new fashion exhibition. It has to be beautiful, it has to be visionary — it has to be a work of art. In 2015, curator Andrew Bolton was tasked to create "China: Through the Looking Glass," an exhibition that celebrated the impact of Chinese design on Western fashion. It's a grueling planning process, from conception to installation, and features clothing from such megastar designers as Karl Lagerfeld and John Paul Gaultier.
But there is so much more to the MET Gala than just the exhibition. There's the food, the decor, the red carpet and most importantly, the guest list. Every year, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour must ensure the most mega-famous, fashion-savvy people attend the ball. The First Monday in May is an inside look at the creation of this revolutionary art exhibition, and the social politics behind making it — and keeping it — the most important social fashion event of the year.
