How I Met Your Mother: The Sexless Inkeeper

How I Met Your Mother returned with force. Marshall had the type of diversion which is actually enjoyable and comical to watch, (the photo montage paired with music is an instant HIMYM classic) Barney was at his antagonistic best, and Ted was witty and self-preserving in a way we haven't seen since probably the second season.

The lighthearted feel of the episode is certainly what had been missing, amusing and silly inside jokes along with ridiculous situations and catchphrases. I would go as far as to say that quips like "The Sexless Inkeeper" may have the long-lasting appeal of such Seinfeldian labels as "The Low Talker" when the show has completed its run. When HIMYM is at its best, it is ever so close to genius, and I believe the show is highly underrated by critics and viewers alike. Barney's poem and Ted's rebuttal for instances, were hilarious and perfectly fluid, showcasing the writer's marvellous teaming of impeccable skills with language mixed in perfect balance with their nack for absolute hilarity. On the same token, the aforementioned photo montage is a hilarious summation of the character of Marshall, and also offers great opportunity for promotional tie-ins and viewer interaction with the show and its characters.

Robin and Lily's roles in the episode were inclusive, yet markedly diminished, however they too offered their moments typically through playing the role of catalyst and counterpoint to their respective partners. All in all, an outstanding episode which had us in stitches. Bravo.

How I Met Your Mother airs once again next week with Ted, Lily and Marshall roadtripping to their favourite Chicago pizza parlour, while Robin seeks U.S. citizenship.

The cat funeral montage made me laugh so hard I nearly fell off my couch.

I don't know what it was, but this episode just didn't do it for me.

Aside from the great (and hilarious) songs/videos by Marshall, the whole "couples friend" storyline felt so dumb to me.

I did like the "Sexless Innkeeper" story, too, but overall it was just a silly episode not up to the usual HIMYM standards. Too "sitcom-y".

I loved that Barney was back with crazy inside jokes and obscure and arbitrary scenario templates. Marshall was hilarious too with the montages, as I said. Considering the overwhelming dose of Stella we had last season and the sappy Robin/Barney dealings we've seen lately, I'll take this episode as a chalk mark on the positive side.
