Bones: The Skull in the Sculpture

Bones is back!! Finally! A skull/body is found inside a crushed car, but the more interesting parts of this episode center on Angela's bisexuality and Sweets' hidden love life.

Angela: Without the risk of pain, there can be no possibility of pleasure, or joy, or... love!

The team is analyzing the body, still inside the crushed car. It is Daisy's turn in the rotation of "Zach's replacements" - you remember, the annoying chick who no one likes except Sweets? They easily figure out that the body is a Caucasian male. B&B head off to the people who delivered the car for crushing.

Oddly enough, it's called "B&B Enterprises" (haha!), an artists company that uses crushed cars for their pieces. They find a weird artsy woman dressed in a kimono and white face paint inside. She is the producer of artist Geoffrey Thorne, the mind behind the "crushed car art". We also meet Roxy, his secretary. Roxy is concerned that Geoffrey (who was suicidal) actually made himself a part of the art by crushing himself into a car. Based on a photo of the victim, they identify that is actually is Geoffrey in the crushed car. Maybe it wasn't suicide though... a rival artist is named, Anton, and apparently they had recently had a huge argument.

Hodgins is very excited to use the Jaws of Life to get the remains out of the car... but "it's not displaced sexual frustration", he insists. Riiiight. Tox reports indicate suicide, because of all the mood stabilizers in his system, and the fact that he was seeing a shrink consistently. They're just about to crack open the crushed car, when they find out that it is now a protected "historical art piece", and they can't destroy it.

Hodgins: (holding the Jaws of Life and being all manly) Oh, this SUCKS!

Also, Angela recognizes Roxy, apparently they are old friends from college.

B&B go see Anton, the rival artist. He clearly did not like Geoffrey, they fought all the time. He says to look at Geoffrey's girlfriend – Roxy. Geoffrey left everything to her in his will.

As Daisy is using an endoscope to look inside the crushed-car-art, Brennan "accidentally" dumps a huge bucket of flesh-eating beetles into the car. Oops! They'll be able to see the skeleton in 30 hours.

In an interview with Roxy, she says that she was NOT in an intimate relationship with Geoffrey, merely his assistant. She thinks that if Geoffrey had committed suicide, he would have left her a note or message. Plus, she had no idea that she was in Geoffrey's will, let alone for a million dollars. Roxy confesses that she is gay – that's why she was never intimate with Geoffrey.

B&B talk to Angela about Roxy, and find out that they were together a long time ago.

Angela: Yes, Roxy is gay. At least she was when we were together.

Booth: In school?

Angela: Yes.

Booth: Oh, you heard rumors.

Angela: No, I have firsthand knowledge.

Booth: Oh, you walked in on her, that's awkward...

Angela: No, we were together for over a year.

Booth: Wow... you and uh, Roxy?

Brennan: You have a problem with that?

Booth: No, I was just processing the information there, and in doing so I was envisioning you and her together, and uh... well, not... well, together, but... really?

It is awkward and hilarious – but with Angela's help, we know that Roxy has never been into men.

The beetles did their work, the bones are clear, and Daisy admits that she had a dysfunctional family, and considers Cam "like a sister". God, I hate her. There are a bunch of fractures on the bones, but they could have been caused by the crushing of the car OR an attack.

Angela is at Roxy's studio, and there is definitely sexual tension. Roxy is also very upset about being a suspect in the murder/suicide, she was obviously close to Geoffrey. Angela leaves suddenly, having a light bulb moment, knowing how to find out if it was, in fact, murder. She uses a huge scanning machine to get a digital rendering of the car, body, and crushing force used to smoosh the car.

Working backwards, she digitally "unfolds" the car and body. All the fractures on the body except one can be attributed to the crushing of the car... the extra one, on the back of the head, was not. Definite murder. Not good for Roxy. Since it is now for sure that it was a murder, the injunction against opening the crushed car is removed, and Hodgins finally gets to use the Jaws of Life. They need to carefully remove the skull, and Daisy, eager to please, takes the skull out and instantly crushes it in her hands. There are several moments of shock where I thought a few things might happen, including the murder of Daisy by Bones and Cam. But Brennan just completely dismisses her, and Cam is seething mad.

Booth takes Angela to see Anton, to re-question him while Brennan is putting the skull back together. On the way, they discuss Angela's relationship with Roxy, and I have a very proud moment when Booth is totally okay with it, even being the straight-laced Catholic guy that he is. Angela, looking at Anton's art, determines that Anton was the painter for Geoffrey's car sculptures! They were actually working together, because Anton's real art wasn't doing very well and he needed money. Booth figures jealousy is the motive and arrests him, only after slamming him around for insulting Angela. Go Booth!

Brennan has the skull back together, and they find the murder weapon is a fire ax. Angela and Brennan have some girl talk, where Angela admits she still has feelings for Roxy. Brennan doesn't give the best advice (because she's Brennan), and Angela goes to talk to Sweets.

The rest of the team find a bunch of evidence: turpentine, cleaned up blood, the body had been rolled and not carried, sweat with cancer medications, etc – all of which point toward the creepy white-face-paint lady. B&B bring her in.

Angela and Sweets talk, and he thinks that her feelings for Roxy are a "rebound" thing. Angela disagrees. Sweets thinks she is scared to be in love, and always finds an escape. Angela disagrees, but he makes a very good argument and she eventually realizes it is true. Angela doesn't want to hurt Roxy again, and decides to let HER decide what she wants.

Cam goes to see Sweets. There is a hilarious misunderstanding where Sweets thinks that Cam is going to tell him that the team finds him annoying and no one wants to work with him anymore. Cam stops him and tells him that it's Daisy they can't work with anymore. She wants to fire her, but needs advice on how to fire her based on her personality. Sweets immediately offers to fire her for Cam – Hmm...

With evidence that the murderer had leukemia, and was using meds that cause skin discoloration, Brennan knows that the creepy white-face-paint lady is definitely the murderer. She was trying to make Geoffrey's art worth more, so that she could benefit from the art sales. She wanted the money. Case closed.

Angela goes to meet with Roxy, who is now rich and free. Roxy takes the lead and kisses Angela, who we see kisses her back. It's cute, and I'm happy for Angela, but I still feel bad for Hodgins.

The team is watching Sweets talk to Daisy, and they all share ideas on how exactly he's going to fire her. He surprises them all:

Sweets: I've got some good news, and some bad news. Which would you like first?

Daisy: The bad news.

Sweets: You're toast here. Nobody wants to work with you.

Daisy: Why?!

Sweets: You know why, Daisy. There are some things you have to work on when it comes to interpersonal relations.

Daisy: Does anybody like me?

Sweets: No, I'm afraid not.

Daisy: What's the good news?

Sweets: (smiles) There's absolutely no reason for us to be discreet about our relationship anymore.

Sweets shows her that he's not ashamed to be with her by kissing her in front of the whole team. Hodgins is "totally shocked". And Brennan comments that "they should not be doing that on the forensic platform". Cam pipes in with, "that's a method of termination I've never tried". Bravo Dr. Sweets!

B&B have a moment, talking about how it will never work because Daisy and Sweets are too different, believe very different things – logic vs emotions. A very non-subtle way of juxtaposing Daisy/Sweets with Brennan/Booth. Clever.
