Review: Failure to Launch

I wasn't looking forward to seeing this movie, so imagine my surprise when I was actually entertained. Perhaps my standards are too low, or maybe the first two and a half months of 2006 have offered nothing at the cinema.

Matthew McConaughey's character, "Trip", is 35 years old and lives with his parents, played by Kathy Bates and everyone's favorite thespian, Terry Bradshaw (I couldn't sleep after seeing Terry naked in one scene). To get Trip out of the house, mom and dad hire Sarah Jessica Parker to help get rid of him. You know they're going to get together at the end of the movie, but that's not the point. It's the journey.

There's a nice supporting cast, including Zooey Deschanel as Sarah Jessica's roommate. Trip's friends Demo and Ace are played by Bradley Cooper and Justin Bartha respectively. Cooper was one of the heavys in Wedding Crashers. There's also a running gag about getting bitten by animals.

This won't win any Oscars, but so what, it's a fun romantic comedy.

Point of interest: Sarah Jessica Parker's character in Sex and the City is named Carrie Bradshaw, and now she's in a movie with Terry Bradshaw. I don't know, I found that interesting.
