In an annual tradition beginning way back in 2009, ShowbizMonkeys.com has set up shop in early July at Birds Hill Park near Winnipeg to cover the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Artist photos, video clips, interviews with some absolute music legends; it was an incredibly fun 11-year run.
Then, as we all know, the world shifted. The 2020 Winnipeg Folk Festival -- with the full line-up having already been announced -- was cancelled, replaced by a one-day virtual event. I gathered in a back yard to watch the livestream with some friends who I often spend time with at Folk Fest, but of course it wasn't the same. Then for 2021, there was talk of a late-summer main stage-only concert series happening out at the Winnipeg Folk Festival site, but it never quite felt safe enough and the event didn't come to fruition. Small outdoor concerts permeated throughout Winnipeg, but none of those felt like being out at the festival site for 4 days of non-stop music.
But now, here we are. It's July 2022, the Winnipeg Folk Festival is back in full force (with a few smart tweaks), and we're resuming our tradition of bringing you the sights and sounds of the weekend. We can't wait!
We always start off our preview with a look back at last year, except in this case, we're looking back THREE years, all the way back to July 2019. We were so innocent, with no idea how long a break it would be before we'd once again hunker down at Little Stage in the Forest for back-to-back-to-back killer acts under the shade of prairie trees. So enjoy this little look back at the 2019 Winnipeg Folk Fest, featuring a song performed that year by Manitoba's own Two Crows for Comfort.
Now it's time to look forward, as we give you our picks for who not to miss if you're headed out to the 2022 Winnipeg Folk Festival!

For those following along at home (or checking things out before heading out to Birds Hill Park), we'll try to get clips from as many of the Folk Fest acts as possible on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. We'll also be updating our Stories with video clips, photos, and end-of-day features from our own Ian Bawa, and as usual, post photo albums of each day.
You can get Winnipeg Folk Festival tickets, schedule information, food vendors, and more info at winnipegfolkfestival.ca. For anyone heading out to the festival, we hope that you make up for lost time and enjoy the heck out of the music and community.
