Movies
After taking a year off last year for a variety of reasons, we're back with our annual Top 10 list of favourite movies compiled from our entire staff. We pride ourselves in the fact that not only do our movie critics take part in our year-end favourites poll, but all our employees.
I'm a simple Star Trek fan. I've never liked the terms "Trekkie" or "Trekker"; I even get embarrassed when people call themselves that. Yet I own a shirt with Captain William T. Riker's silhouetted beard on it.
If the word Cloverfield holds no meaning for you than Paramount Pictures and JJ Abrams' Bad Robot Productions haven't done their job, you simply don't hang out online very much, or you've been somewhere without modern technology since the summer.
In the world of film criticism, the month of December can be described as hellish at best, even if you're not based out of New York or Los Angeles. Screenings ramp up and activities other than watching movies become a long lost memory.
The name Jessica Lucas may not be familiar to movie audiences yet, but rest assured with the imminent launch of Cloverfield (aka 01-18-08, aka that cool looking movie which had a trailer on Transformers), she's about to burst out huge.
In the most exciting press conference of the weekend -- perhaps even the whole week -- the Golden Globe award winners were announced Sunday night. Normally, the Globes are the "fun" awards show.
Once again, moviegoers and critics alike find themselves in January, the month where the Hollywood awards begin to be handed out and the number of new offerings at the local multiplex begins to diminish. The awards season is upon us, and with that comes the list of Golden Globe nominees, announced Thursday morning.
As anyone in the movie and entertainment journalism business knows, the weeks leading up to Christmas are some of the busiest in the year. Studios rush to stake their claim on the best screening locations and times for their award-caliber pictures and holiday offerings, while smaller films, are often left in the dust fighting for even the smallest bit of attention.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. At least if you're at the malls or a multiplex or even better yet, a multiplex in a mall. Last time I looked at the calendar, the date read early November putting us squarely a month and a half away from the arrival of Santa.
