On a Sunday in 1990, I stood in an empty mall (stores where I lived weren't open on Sunday back then) waiting in line for the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film with my little brother. At 16, I was a fan of Laird and Eastman's black-and-white indie comic.
Some films are unnecessary to remake, others impossible. 1984's The Karate Kid seems an apt example of the latter -- its charm largely attributable to nostalgic recollections of what, in the clarity of adulthood, is an irrefutably hokey premise. But somehow its legacy lives, partly due to our current love affair with kitsch.
Color me surprised, this movie was good. REALLY quite good in my opinion.
When I first heard they were remaking/updating/rebooting/sequel-ing The Karate Kid, I met the news with skepticism. I react that way anytime I hear that Hollywood is remaking or rebooting anything. I was indifferent when I heard the movie would star Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith.
