Okay, I concede. Sheldon was once again hilarious as the focal point of The Big Bang Theory this week. The writers keep devising new ways for him to shine, yet using the same foundation, and it has been slightly unpredictable and always entertaining. This week we saw him attempting to seek revenge against a former hero of his: Star Trek: The Next Generation's Wil Wheaton (an actor of whom I've never heard, though this didn't detract from the plot in any way).
Sheldon's empathy actually got the best of him in this situation, one of those rare instances which are becoming not-so-rare in which we see Sheldon's humanity exposed and oftentimes exploited to the point of fallibility, a word which Sheldon would certainly know but with which he would never concede to relate. His echoing yell at the end of the episode was all things hilarious, surprising and abrupt, ending the episode with it reverberating in the earth's atmosphere. It seems a trivial matter, but I was actually quite surprised at the tone of masculinity Sheldon was able to exude in his voice. The actor, Jim Parsons, and the character of Sheldon are not necessarily the picture of virility and ferocity. In fact, in "real-life", Parsons is actually much meeker than his television counterpart.
Concurrently, Leonard and Penny attempted to fix up Wolowitz with one of Penny's "hot friends", an experiment which initially did not go to plan, as the two had absolutely nothing in common and Wolowitz resorted to his typical creepy antics. Eventually, however, the two found common ground in their mutual annoyance with their mothers, and, forgive me if I have this wrong, but it appeared that the two had left things on a note which implied that they would continue to date. This portion of the program was almost as enjoyable as Sheldon and Raj's comic book store adventures, with Wolowitz' odd and disconcerting behaviour finding new comedic life in every different variation of setting and circumstance. The idea was simple, yet it was executed to the right proportions and was accentuated with the aforementioned mild twist which left a pleasant taste to the scenes.
All in all, a strong showing for the show, now in its third season. Like all of the CBS Monday programs, The BIg Bang Theory will not be airing this week and will instead resume the following Monday, November 2 at its usual time of 9:30. The episode will involve Sheldon teaching Leonard how to understand football (Sheldon? Football? See this is what I'm talking about) and Raj and Howard will clash in a manner which may spell the end of their friendship.
