A young girl named Liesel (Sophie Nélisse) is sent to live with a German foster family during World War II because of her parents' communist ties. She finds it difficult to adjust to her new family, and spends her time reading books she's stolen.
Meanwhile, in the basement of her home, located just outside of Munich, a Jewish refugee is being sheltered by her adoptive parents.
Based on the novel by Australian author Markus Zusak.
