New Music Releases: November 10th, 2009

Switchfoot Hello Hurricane (Amazon)

It's taken Switchfoot a little over three years to put together their seventh studio album, but it was definitely worth the wait. After the release of Oh! Gravity. back in 2006, the band announced that it was parting ways with their Major label, Columbia/SonyBMG and would release their next album independently. Since then, the band has been busy building their own recording studio and founding an independent label, lowercase people records. Frontman Jon Foreman has also released a series of solo EP's and worked with Nickel Creek guitarist Sean Watkins on a side project, Fiction Family.

Looking for a new sound for Hello Hurricane, the band enlisted award-winning producers Darren Thorpe (Radiohead, Outkast) and Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Alanis Morissette). The result is an album with a much wider scope than their previous releases, as Foreman puts it: "The darks are darker and the lights are brighter and the lows are lower and the highs are higher." Fans of the band who have watched them grow and change musically throughout their ten year history will not be disappointed with the new creative directions Hello Hurricane takes. The past three years have been a journey for Switchfoot and after all, good things come to those who wait.

Tori Amos Midwinter Graces (Amazon)

Tori Amos is probably the last person you'd ever expect to do something as traditional as a Christmas album, but stranger things have happened. Midwinter Graces includes a mix of traditional Christmas hymns and her own original holiday material, but even the more traditional tracks have been completely reworked and include new lyrics written by Tori.

These Scottish masters of the slow build have decided to commemorate their fifteen year history with a two-disc greatest hits compilation. Up to Now will have three original new songs including 'Just Say Yes', written by frontman Gary Lightbody and previously recorded by Nicole Scherzinger (she of Pussycat Dolls fame).
