Part One: Ambition

I hate writing traditional movie reviews. I hate having to express myself within the confines of a structured checklist. Here's the plot summary. The acting was strong. The writing was confident. The sets were pretty. The music was loud.

Worst of all is having to rate films though some kind of metric: numbers, letters, stars, thumbs, tomatoes, etc.

Congratulations to Harry Potter, the boy wizard who just scored the biggest North American opening in motion picture history this past weekend. In another time, this kind of news would have the showbiz world at a standstill. But in today's showbiz society, it's just another day at the office. And that's too bad, because the numbers are impressive.

Pictures in an Empty Room: The Shameless Double Dip

Earlier this year, Avatar was released on DVD and Blu-Ray. The release was as bareboned as it could be, as it only contained the movie. In a few days, Avatar is going to be released again, but as an extended collector's edition version.

I know what you're thinking. This guy is giving a movie with man-eating fish as its main characters a 4 out of 5 star rating, and therefore must be an idiot and/or he doesn't know what he is talking about?

Well you're wrong, because this film is so GD entertaining it might just be the most fun you'll have at the movies all year.

White man gets sent to spy on the savage enemies. He earns their trust and falls in love with the chief's daughter. White man's army attacks the savages. The savages, and the chief's daughter feel betrayed, and want nothing to do with the white man.

Oscar nominations: Avatar and The Hurt Locker lead the way with 9 nominations each

For the first time in over half a century, there are ten films nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Many thought that this may dilute the prestigious category, while others hoped it would open up the door to certain types of films that deserved nominations but are often ignored by the Oscars.

Avatar takes home two trophies in a largely predictable (or at least safe) Golden Globes ceremony

Amongst a largely unexciting group of winners, Avatar stood as the only feature with multiple Golden Globe victories, winning for Best Picture (Drama) and Best Director (James Cameron).
