Bones: Yanks In the UK (1)

As my first recap for Showbiz Monkeys, I feel I must tell you why I got hooked on Bones. You see, I am a huge Joss Whedon fan, and therefore a huge fan of the Buffy and Angel series. However, I was never a fan of the character Angel (David Boreanaz) and made fun of him relentlessly. When I discovered he was starring in a new TV series, I thought to myself, "Self, you MUST watch this show, and MUST laugh as he fails miserably at having any character at all!" <insert evil laugh here>

Now, I hate admitting when I am wrong, but after only one episode, I was hooked. Now here we are at Season 4, and the show just gets better. Anyways, on to the recap!

Brennan (Emily Deschanel) is guest-lecturing at Oxford University in England. Booth (David Boreanaz) is in the audience, falling asleep. Brennan shouts at him from the podium to wake him up. She goes on to talk about how pure logic (that scientists trust so much) can be destructive, and uses Zack (seasons 1-3) as her example. This is the only mention of Zack in the whole episode, which I found surprising - it was kind of a major upset when we discovered he was the "bad guy" in last season's finale, and everyone seemed rather emotional... I guess I just expected a bit more elaboration on that little plot line. Anywho.

Later, Booth and Brennan chat about Ian Wexler, whose class Brennan was just lecturing in. She likes him (he's hot), but Booth doesn't. Of course, this is because Booth and Brennan LOVE each other and just don't know it. That part may or may not be all in my head. Ian comes over to flirt with Brennan, to which she tells him that she's "been warned about him" a lot over the last few days. Ian answers his cell and we learn that a body has been found. He asks B&B to come along.

Here we find Inspector Cate Pritchard, and suddenly realize that Pritchard&Wexler are the English version of Booth&Brennan, except, well, not as awesome. Booth tells Pritchard that he's upset that Scotland Yard won't let him have a gun, and we all make inward comments about men and their guns. A body is seen getting dragged out of the Thames River in a red car. They think it is Portia Frampton, an American girl who is heir to lots of money. Ian mentions that her father is trying to build skyscrapers over a site he is currently searching (with his students) for Bronze Age remains. Ian and Brennan examine the body, and concur that she was indeed murdered. Duh. Pritchard says the family will demand FBI involvement, since they are actually American (and rich), and Booth says he's not going to help unless he can have a gun, and Pritchard says she'll do her best to get him one. Brennan sends the remains and evidence back to the Jeffersonian for analysis.

Cut to the evidence, magically transported in an instant to the Jeffersonian in America. As Angela gets started, who shows up but Grayson Barasa, better known as Birimbau (her not-so-ex-husband). Angela smiles, laughs, jumps on him and kisses him. Then says she wants her divorce. Bah hah!

Back in England, Booth and Brennan have a discussion about who has the better hotel, Ian shows up to tell them about Portia's family. They all head off to talk to Portia's father. Back at the lab, Clark, Zack's replacement (who, in my opinion, was an interesting choice of replacement) is describing how Portia was attacked. Angela walks in and introduces Grayson, and Cam can't stop staring. Sure, he's good looking, but Cam was all but drooling. Angela doesn't want everyone staring because it might upset Hodgins, what with all the competition and such. Dr. Sweets walks in and sees Grayson. He then laughs and says, "Poor Hodgins."

Finally Hodgins is introduced to Grayson-the-ex. Hodgins hopes he's there to sign the divorce papers, but Grayson says he won't because he's still in love with Angela. Hodgins is not impressed.

Booth and Brennan are questioning the Frampton's back in England. Booth asks for a list of enemies, and when they deny any trouble, Brennan brings out a tabloid photo of Portia wearing very little. The Frampton's get upset, and Mr. Frampton's girlfriend says that she talked to Portia about everything, including how she was secretly dating Harry Bonham, heir to a duke. The Frampton's think that the duke has something to do with the murder, and beg B&B to find out who murdered their daughter.

Booth, Brennan, and Pritchard are in a rental car that Booth is driving, very badly, and Booth is explaining that he rented an Aston, not an Austin, which is the small car they're currently in. Booth drives on the wrong side of the road, almost hits a lot of things, then stops in the middle of an intersection to get out and scream, "I HATE ENGLAND!" Probably one of my favorite parts of the episode. As Booth is screaming in the street, Brennan gets a call from Cam, who tells us that Portia was preggers when she died. They finally get to Duke Bonham's palace, and Booth has issues getting out of the tiny car.

Back at the lab, Angela and Cam discuss evidence that Portia's car had a was transporting a motorcycle or scooter... probably the killer's.

At Bonham's castle...er, palace, Booth and Brennan are talking about codpieces. There was this suit of armor you see... never mind. In a room with the Bonham's, Harry says he knew something was wrong when he hadn't heard from Portia for so long. Booth thinks their secret relationship is suspicious, and the Bonham's do not appreciate the accusations being made. Apparently, the relationship had to be secret because of Portia's father's bad reputation. Brennan brings up the nude photo, which upsets everyone, and it is revealed to the family that Portia was pregnant. Harry then tells us that Portia broke up with him, and Booth says thats motive for murder.

Angela explains to everyone in England (via webcam) that the tabloid photo was taken from indoors and was doctored. Angela mentions to Brennan that Grayson is there - still yikes - and then they discuss who could have taken the photograph.

Grayson is eating at a diner when Hodgins walks in. He's there to get Grayson to sign the divorce papers, who thinks Hodgins should want "what's best for Angela". Hodgins says he loves Angela more than Grayson, to which Grayson says "We are at an impasse." Outside the diner, Angela meets them both, and Hodgins learns that she kissed Grayson. Hodgins punches the brick-wall-Grayson, who picks up Hodgins and launches him into a passing garbage truck. Angela gets mad... Duh.

In England, B&B question Mr. Frampton's girlfriend, who admits that she took the tabloid photo, because she wanted Mr. Frampton to see his daughter as a mature adult, not an innocent child that needs looking after, so he'd be more inclined to get married. Mr. Frampton comes in and finds out, then gets mad and splits, with the girlfriend following him.

Booth and Pritchard are outside at a restaurant, where Pritchard presents Booth with a "James Bond gun", and Booth is happy. He gets a call from Angela, who found a letter from Portia's mother. It was only dated a year ago, but the mother is thought to be long-dead.

Brennan and Ian are at the excavation site, where there is still no sign of any remains from the Bronze age, and it looks like Frampton is going to get to build his skyscraper. Ian makes very clear sexual advances, but Brennan says that Booth told her she shouldn't trust him... although, she does agree to a compromise of having drinks and seeing where it goes.

Back at the lab, Hodgins and Cam are going through evidence, when Hodgins asks Cam if Angela is mad at him. She says "dur" (not really), and Hodgins is confused. He thought women liked when men fought over them. Cam says "women" is an unacceptable generalization.

Back in England, B&B are in Booth's tiny car, trying in vain to pull out of a parking spot. Brennan tells him that she didn't sleep with Ian, and Booth says there isn't a man in the country that wouldn't want to have sex with her. He says that she's special and Ian is not. (Aw!) Cam calls, and discusses Booth's driving ability with Brennan for a second. We learn that Portia suffered from a hereditary disease as Booth hits the curb and gets a flat tire. Brennan concludes that if Mr. Frampton doesn't have this disease, he is not Portia's biological father.

Brennan, Booth, and Pritchard confront Mr. Frampton about Portia's mother still being alive, and it is discovered that she WAS alive, but dying, and sent secret letters. Mr. Frampton is told that Portia isn't his biological daughter, and he gets upset. Pritchard decides that she should conduct the rest of the interview.

On a break at the lab, Sweets tells Angela a funny story from his childhood – the moral of his story is that no one can "have" her heart unless she gives it to them. He actually is a good psychologist sometimes!

Examining the evidence car tires, Hodgins shows Cam that there was crushed coral in the treads, which comes from expensive roadways. Angela walks in and takes Hodgins away to chat. Cam thinks they're going to have sex in the closet again, and warns them about the security cameras.

Outside, Angela tells Hodgins that her heart isn't his to take, but hers to give away - however, she wants to give it to him. They kiss, Grayson sees it and realizes that Angela really does love Hodgins.

Back in England, Booth is still mad about his car, and Brennan finds out about the crushed coral in the tires via phone call. They deduce that it must have come from the road by the Bonham's house.

B&B and their English doubles all head to the Bonham's house, and discuss that Mr. Bonham could be Portia's biological father. They also notice a scooter outside the house. Booth pulls out his gun, but apparently they don't use guns when approaching suspects in England, all they need is the letter from Portia's mother. Booth is confused because they don't actually have the letter, and then realizes that they can lie and the Bonham's won't know!

Inside, Booth asks Brennan to read the non-existent letter to the Bonham's, and she pretends to read the part about Portia's biological father from a blank piece of paper. Mr. Bonham stops her and tells Harry to leave. They all accuse Bonham, when the butler steps up and says he did it. Really? The butler?! Booth is shocked and astonished.

Outside, Booth, Brennan, and Ian discuss that the butler is probably just protecting the duke, but they'll never know. Ian asks Brennan to go back to Oxford with him, and Booth wants to pull out the gun he hasn't gotten to use yet. Brennan stops Booth, and pulls Ian aside to say she won't sleep with him because it would upset Booth. (See? They LOVE each other!.. Ahem.) He leaves, promising to call her before she leaves England. The episode "ends" with B&B bickering, as they do so well.

The premiere of this season is a 2-hour long, 2 part episode, but I've just realized how incredibly long this recap is. Therefore, stay tuned for the second half!
