Bones: The Perfect Pieces in the Purple Pond

Some dude pees in a pond, it turns purple, and then dismembered pieces of a body start floating to the top! Hence, the title of this episode.

ZACK!! Zack is in the looney bin, talking to Sweets about logic vs balderdash. I miss Zach. We need him back. I don't really care that he killed someone, do you?

The body is missing a head, Booth's back hurts, and Brennan ordered that the whole pond be drained and shipped back to the Jeffersonian. There we meet the new "Zach's replacement", a very young Mr. Bray. They find out that the victim was a "giant toddler" - he had a disease that made his body and age out of whack. Mr. Bray has a weird accent and it is distracting. Hodgins tells us that the guy peeing made some algae turn purple (average male pees at 21 ml/second!). Angela offers to tell Mr. Bray all about Zack and "how the lab works".

Hodgins is really crusty, and has to hatch an insect egg. Cam tells him that his attitude is getting out of hand.

The victim is Jared Addison, an author, and his mother is in shock. She had no idea he was missing, he had checked into a hotel to write his book. Booth brings in Sweets to look at Jared's room – it is ridiculously organized. Sweets says that he probably had OCD.

Sweets: If we ask which of Jared Addison's set patterns have been recently disrupted, we may very well discover what got him killed.

Brennan: No, we can't ask Jared Addison... he's dead.

Sweets: (to Booth) She is WICKED literal!

They guess sex was the trigger (based on his age), and they find pictures of his much older "lover" hidden in his shoes. To the Booth-mobile!

The lover says that Jared wanted to marry her. Sweets and Brennan agree that older women with younger men is a good match. The lover was supportive in Jared's quest to overcome his OCD – he was in a behavior modification course.

Mr. Bray and Brennan discover that the victim recently punched someone. Brennan asks him if he's ever "conducted a sexual relationship with someone over 20 years older than himself". He takes it WAY the wrong way, and gets all weirded out.

Hodgins visits Zack in the looney bin. Things are slightly awkward, but touching. Hodgins tells Zack about the case, and leaves him the case file – he usually finds things that the other don't.

Zack: I'm king of the Looney Bin.

Hodgins: Yeah, you are.

Zack feels sorry for Hodgins, because of Angela and everything, and Hodgins starts to laugh. Apparently it's funny that his best friend who is in a looney bin feels sorry for him.

The professor of the OCD course has a shiner, and he is teaching a class when B&B come in. Jared was his star pupil, getting much better at controlling his OCD. It wasn't Jared who punched him, it was someone else. Another student in the class tells us that Jared went to get coffee after breakfast one day. Hodgins had found coffee grounds and sea kelp in his shoe treads. We go see the coffee-guy. He pushed Jared for insulting the cleanliness of the coffee cups, but didn't kill him.

Mr. Bray goes to talk to Angela about the whole Brennan-liking-younger-men thing. Angela gets the feeling that he owes the mob money, and Angela tells him that he must be hallucinating about Brennan's comments.

Angela: You need to look for some alternative explanation for what you think happened between you and Brennan. And if you can't find anything, you should just... assume you're hallucinating, or insane. Because she absolutely didn't hit on you.

Looks like Jared called his book publisher (who had dropped him a while ago) every single day. The publisher gets brought in, tells us that he was going to take Jared back because he was finally cured of his OCD – which is an interesting "marketable" story, apparently.

Angela talks to Sweets about why Brennan would have asked Mr. Bray about his exploits with older women. It all makes sense now! Angela tells Mr. Bray what happened (and how it related to the case). It gets a little... flirty, and I decide that I don't like Mr. Bray.

Another sarcastic crusty exchange between Hodgins and Cam tells us that a "white fly" from a humid place is the bug that was found in Jared's shoes. We figure he was killed in a plant nursery owned by Jared's lover's son. They find coffee grounds and sea kelp, as well as a shovel which may have blood on it. Jared had been there to ask if he could marry the dude's mom – which was weird, because of the age difference. They take in the son, but it wasn't blood in the shovel, so without the head, we know nothing.

ZACK WALKS IN! He broke out of the Looney bin by stealing Sweet's card because he "knows where to find the head"! He had been looking at the photos of the room, and thinks the mom has OCD too. There are sets of 12 everywhere around the house, except for one birdbath in the backyard.

The mom was upset because Jared had overcome his OCD and was going to leave her. We go check out the birdbath, and sure enough, the head is underneath. Case closed.

Sweets takes Zack back to the Looney Bin, where Zack tells us that he never actually killed the guy last season. WHAT?! Sweets says that they need to tell someone, but Zack says he will still be an accessory to murder, and get put into prison... he'd rather be in the looney bin. Zack makes Sweets promise not to tell anyone – doctor/patient confidentiality.

Brennan is throwing out her book, she has lost faith in the publishers (she doesn't want to sell books because of her marketability). Booth fixes it by telling her that he actually reads her books, and loves them. Brennan reciprocates by fixing his back. Seriously, these two need to do it already. I mean, come on.
